They hope to end “a broken promise” by three consecutive mayoral administrations to build the streetcar. One council member thinks the streetcar is too expensive and suggests buses instead.
Tiny houses coming to Georgetown: 40 new tiny houses for homeless families will soon grace the Georgetown neighborhood. Electricity and a lock on the door mean a place to stay that's much safer than a tent, says one official.
Hear better, Mount Rainier: Verizon and T-Mobile are trying to bring better cell phone coverage to Mount Rainier. The service providers say they would not need to build towers and instead could place equipment in the attics of two public buildings, with antennas mounted on the interior of the east and west ends.
Ways to keep safe while cycling: In advance of the warm weather and a typical uptick in bicycling, police in Mt. Vernon issued a list of tips to share the road, reminding drivers that cyclists have the right to be there. Police also encouraged cyclists to wear helmets.
New development for Capitol Hill: A new 6-story building on Capitol Hill just opened, replacing a surface parking lot. The new building holds two theaters, three restaurants, offices for four local non-profits, and 88 new low-income apartments. The developer aimed to “keep the funky fabric of Capitol Hill” and persisted through 20 years of approval delays.
Affordable housing, Tacoma style: Tacoma is adding 40 affordable housing units to a new apartment complex, which happens to be a Superfund site (meaning there are hazardous materials that require a long-term cleanup plan). The units will make up 20% of the total number of apartments currently under construction.
