The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (DCPSC) is helping the District meet its aggressive climate policy goals, setting standards and ensuring the city’s clean energy transition is equitable and affordable, and creates climate resiliency.

By the end of 2021, the District deployed 2,337 new solar energy systems, including 82 Community Renewable Energy Facilities (CREFs), which are large solar facilities providing power to residents unable to put solar on their own roofs.
The DCPSC is also leading by organizing a clean energy summit on Jan. 18, 2023, to help people better understand current clean energy issues. There will be three panels consisting of federal government officials, state and local regulators, renewable energy leaders, and utility executives who will address their climate goals, achievements, and challenges.
During the first session, experts will explain how two new federal measures will help spur climate action while also focusing on the regulator’s role in supporting clean energy programs and their impact on utility customers. The second panel aims to help the DCPSC develop a diverse workforce and supply chain while ensuring the energy infrastructure is reliable and affordable. The third panel will discuss the costs associated with the clean energy transition, how the costs will be allocated, and who will bear the costs and reap the benefits of the energy transition. “Affordability is the key component of the clean energy transition that doesn’t always get the same bandwidth that other topics do,” said DCPSC Chairman Emile Thompson.

Tree Lighting Ceremony — Hosted by NBC4’s Shawn Yancy, City Ridge’s tree lighting ceremony will kick off at 7 pm, featuring a performance and sing-along with a local choir.
Festive, Kid-Friendly Activities — Throughout the evening, families are invited to join all kinds of fun activities across the property:
- Face painting
- Crafts
- Train rides
- Write letters to and take photos with Santa
- Live performances from carolers, choirs and more!
Goodies & Giveaways — Warm up with delicious bites from King Street Oyster Bar before they open their permanent doors at City Ridge! At the Sweets Shoppe, guests can also select from a variety of seasonal treats or decorate cookies with Wegmans. Guests will also walk away with gifts and goodies to bring home and keep the celebrations going throughout the season.
When — The event will be from 4-8 pm this Saturday, December 3, with the Tree Lighting Ceremony from 7-7:30 pm.
Where — The Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on the Great Lawn at the entrance to City Ridge (14 Ridge Square NW), with activities scattered throughout the property. Parking is available on-site.

As DC’s home for improv, Washington Improv Theater’s unscripted shows have long been a highlight of DC’s theater scene. Going into its 25th anniversary season, the small nonprofit theater had just successfully mounted a return to live performances post-quarantine when it unexpectedly lost its lease at its longtime home on 14th Street.
Thanks to the theater’s aggressive space search, WIT’s landed a one-year residency at the newly renovated Studio Theatre. The first performance series at Studio, titled Playing It By Ear, concludes this weekend and features WIT’s veteran musical ensemble iMusical. iMusical is a nationally known ensemble that creates instant musicals based off of a single audience suggestion.
The show is a hit with one reviewer calling it a “don’t miss.” DC Theater Arts’ John Stoltenberg writes: “I’ve been digging their work for years… It’s never not fun, the funny keeps on coming; and in the midst of the spontaneity and hilarity, there can be fleeting flashes of insight.”
This is the final weekend of Playing It By Ear, and general admission tickets are $15. WIT will return for another performance series November 18.
WIT also operates a popular classes program that enrolls students from all walks of life seeking community, a creative outlet, and a much-needed dose of joy. WIT’s organizational training program WIT@Work brings improv-based trainings to workplaces ranging from Deloitte to Capital One to multiple government agencies.
